about

~

This album was recorded less than a year after I had left the band with the creepy name. So, less than 12 months since I had nearly been kicked to death in a Vienna doorway; with all but one of the songs ("Help Myself") written in that window.

As has been diagnosed since then, I was experiencing PTSD from the assault, the manner in which my departure manifested with and my experiences whilst a member of said band with creepy name.
I think that is why this album is so sonically different. I had already done the noisy experimental RAWK, so I needed to do something different - and also psychologically distance myself from the experiences I had just suffered.

I was lucky enough to record this album with the amazing and mercurial Iain Archer. Iain really worked his magic to pull something...anything...out of the traumatised husk of musician he found in me.

I'm so proud of this record, and it is easily the most "accessible" thing I've ever done. It never really found its audience as it was probably just too different from what people knew me for. Maybe one day people will dig it as much as I do. And I dig it so much for the very reason that is miles away from the testosterone fuelled pomp of my previous collaborators.
Who the hell wants to keep going to that party? I should stress, I am very proud of lots of the afore mentioned pomp.

Whilst on the topic of pomp...The final song on this album (Close Your Eyes, Fall Asleep") is one of my favourites (of my own). Its a big Beatley bonanza. The sort of song that I had always wanted to have on a record, butI feel it kinda got lost at the end of the album...but its so bombastic...it really couldn't go anywhere else on the record!

The only solo cut on the album ("Common Prayer") was recorded close to midnight in St Lukes Church in London. The creaks and pops you hear in the track is the wood in the rafters cooling since I insisted in doing it in the dark with the lights off (the vid is on YouTube somewhere).

I'm really amazed this album exists. And it wouldn't if it wasn't for the kindness and belief of Third Bar (thank you!) and, of course, the Pledge Campaign (thank you so much!) that got it out into the wider world. It is a miracle really, when I think of the PTSD now, and a snapshot of a person who suddenly found themselves alone in the world after having told tales of solidarity to baying audiences. The song, "Three", perfectly encapsulates this, before I try to re-inject some optimism to proceedings with "Big Red Van"; a song I once convinced a Newcastle crowd that was about Van Morrisons supposed Communist leanings. Spoiler; its not.

Please, turn up and enjoy.
