about

This album was recorded in 2015 shortly after I (Tony) had just met Mr David Lyttle, who was the the Musician in Residence at the Nerve Centre in Derry at the time, and had just become the first Irish musician to be nominated for a MOBO. I was slinging my acoustic guitar led song and dance man show wherever would still have me, and doing a damn fine job of it too. Or so I kept telling myself.

We recorded the album* on two mics only; one for guitar and vocals, and one for drums/rhodes, with David only hearing the songs for the first time that day. The session was intense but also a laugh riot, which is not always the case in the studio though it should be if possible.

The album was released in November 2015 only on digital platforms and if memory serves me correct we released it unannounced, without any press or a radio campaign. This tactic worked extremely well as it hit Number 19 in the UK album charts for a week (before plummeting out with unmatched aplomb), and twice sat at the Number 1 spot in Digital Folk/Blues Charts.
Hey, I never thought I would have a number one album, let alone a Folk/Blues one, and certainly not twice.

*One track was recorded prior to these sessions, "Yet to Break", which features the Bass playing genius of Herb Magee. His contribution brought the song to life and complimented Davids carnival percussion perfectly. Its definitely our Paul Simon moment.
The album has some glorious contradictions, like a blues song with uplifting lyrics ("Seek & Ye Shall Find Blues"), a love story that never really resolves ("Babe I Don't Know"), and a song that removes the verse and just hammers home a chorus ("My Lucky Rabbit Foot"). Davids keys on "Everybody Else" take the song where I never knew it needed to go, on the Rhodes (pun fully intended).

I'm extremely proud of this bare little record. I know it is nothing like the other albums I have put out in its relative sonic emptiness (I usually save that for the lyrics), but for that reason it will always be a special one to me, as well as playing with greats like Herb and David.
Oh and the chart thing too.

I hope you enjoy it.

Live long and prosper.
